Pietermaritzburg

Our first stop in South Africa was Pietermaritzburg where Julia's Aunt Gill, Uncle Justin, and cousins Nick and Alex live.

We arrived early evening to Tibouchina Terrace (family's home) to the family winding down the celebration of her Uncle Alan's marriage to Paddy.  The entire family was there, so lots of hugs were had and introductions made before retiring to the patio for drinks and leftover dinner.

Summer weather was welcome as we heard reports of a foot + of snow being dropped on the Tri-State area!

After dinner the obligitory family photographs were taken before the group started to disperse in several directions the next morning.  The family had not been together as a whole since Christmas 2006, so it is special to us to capture photographs like those below.

After dinner and the photographs we were introduced by the cousins - Clare, Warren, Angus and girlfriend Sarah, Nick, and Alex - to 30 Seconds, a South African trivia board game that they had all been playing over the holiday.  With 3 Americans (the weak links) we had to shuffle the teams around to get 2 somewhat evenly matched sides.

At the end of the night we said goodbye to Gill, Justin, Nick, and Alex who were leaving at the crack of dawn to drive to St. Francis Bay.  That would be our next stop when we joined them there for New Years a few days later.
